WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN PICKING COLOR COMBINATIONS

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR TIPS ON HOW TO PICK COLORS THAT LOOK GOOD TOGETHER?
Are you wondering what color’s go together? Are you afraid of picking the wrong color combinations? I know how you feel. Especially with all the color choices that are out there.
Are you spending more time worrying about which colors to use, than you do on making the actual project? Let me share with you my super secret insiders tip listed in method #1 below. You won’t believe how simple it is really.
These color combination tips will show you different ways to look at color.
METHOD #1 – RECOLLECTION PAPER PACKS. I have found that the easiest way to pick color combinations that go together is to use the Recollections brand cardstock paper packs. These paper packs take all the guess work out for you, as the colors in the packages go with each other. I know, it really isn’t a big secret and is probably more like cheating. but hey, it is the easiest way. You can find them at your local Michaels craft store or online with Amazon. You can’t go wrong with these pre-selected color combinations. They come in 50 sheet packages, 10 sheets each of 5 different colors, that go together, so there is no more guessing.
METHOD #2 – NATURE . Nature provides awesome color combinations. Next time you find yourself at the park or out on a walk, take a look around. Really look. Instead of the usual glance we tend to give things as we hurry past. Take a good look at your neighbors yard. What type plants to they have? Are the flowers blooming? What kind of greenery do they have? Light green, dark green or maybe even green and pink. Take it all in. I bet you can find all sorts of color combinations on your next walk or outing.
METHOD #3 – PAINT CHIPS. Your local hardware store that carries paint is another great way to find color combinations. Next time you are at one of these stores, take a trip to the paint department. The walls are covered with paint sample chips and booklets. And the best part – they are free. Select a few of the colors that you like to work. Take samples home with you to have on hand. When you need inspiration or wonder what colors would like together, grab your paint chips and spread them out. This is a great way to play with color combo’s.
METHOD #4 – YOU. Go with your instinct. Be adventurous and just stack a few sheets of paper in front of you like this (see above photo). Do you like the color combinations? If not, trying selecting a different shade in one of the colors, or swapping out one color at a time. Just keep rearranging until you find something that says, hey I like that, pick me!
METHOD #5 – COLOR WHEEL. You can always pick up a color wheel in the paint section of your local craft store. These are handy tools to have on hand and will point you in the right direction for finding the perfect color combinations.
After all, one of the best things about working with paper is the price. The price is low and makes this a great way to learn and try different color combinations. Don’t be afraid, just keep trying different combinations out. You will start to get a feel for it. Just like most things, the more you do it, the easier it becomes.
So we learned that we can find help with colors by using prepackage color combos, looking to nature, hardware store paint chips, a color wheel, and your own instinct. Hopefully one or more of these methods will be useful to you. I find them more I create the more comfortable I get with my color selections.
