Are you looking for ways to frame 3D designs?

Now that you have created your beautiful 3D layered mandala, your probably asking yourself, “Now what?” With all of those layers your mandala wont fit in a standard frame. So let’s look at a couple options for displaying your mandala. You will want to keep a few thing in mind when trying to decide if you want to frame your 3D layered designs.
Here are some things to think about:
- How thick is your design? You will want to measure the depth of your project before you purchase a frame for it. Or, you can make your design to fit your frame. This is what I find I do a lot.
- How big is your design overall? If your project is too big, let’s use 23″ x 23″ for example, you may want to consider not using a frame at all. The bigger the project, the more costly the frame. I tend to use 9 x 9 frames. Mostly because I like using 8.5 x 11 cardstock.
- How long do you plan on hanging it? Maybe you only plan on hanging for a party or holiday and don’t want to or need to purchase a frame.
So now that you have decided on framing or not, let’s figure out how to hang it. I have a couple suggestions and helpful solutions for you.
- Purchase a shadow box – You may want to consider framing your project if you want to display it long term. I do this with a lot of my 3D artwork. I like to use Michael’s 9 x 9 shadowbox frames by Studio Decor. They have a large selection of colors online and run sales often. Just be sure that you check the measurements listed before you order. They usually vary from a depth of 1.25″ – 2.75″ depending on the size of frame you are looking for.
- Purchase a display frame – This is not a shadowbox or a picture frame. It is somewhere in between. I use the 12′ x 12′ ones also from Michael’s , Fundamentals by Studio Decor. The website doesn’t list depth, but it will hold approx. 1/2″. These are great for larger mandala’s that only have a few layers.
- Make your own shadowboxes from cardstock – I know there are a few tutorials online showing you how to do this. I myself haven’t tried it, so I don’t want to recommend anyone’s site at this time. This is great option for short time like the holidays.
Hang with Command Strips from 3M – I use these for a lot of my short term and larger items. They are super affordable and you can move the item anytime without having to worry about leaving nail holes in your walls.

Hang with string, cording or ribbon – This is also great for the holidays or just as another quick nd easy way to hang your project.
Quick Recap of Suggested Ways for Displaying Your 3D images

I hope you found that one of the ways listed of purchasing a shadowbox, making your own shadowbox, using ribbon, cording, or best of all command strips, will help you on your way to hanging beautiful artwork everyone.
